DU ranks third in nation for study abroad

DU is third in the nation in the percentage of undergraduate students who study abroad from U.S. higher education institutions, according to the 2011 Open Doors report, which was released Nov. 14 by the Institute of International Education.

According to the report, 824 DU undergraduate students — 69.7 percent of the student population — studied abroad during the 2009–10 academic year, up from 61.4 percent and 810 students in 2008–09. DU’s ranking improved one spot this year. The University of San Diego and Pepperdine University finished ahead of DU, with 71.4 percent and 70.2 percent of their undergraduate students studying abroad, respectively.

“The numbers and ranking of this Open Doors report show the continued ability of the University of Denver to offer a variety of international education programming, including allowing students to study abroad as Cherrington Global Scholars, which makes an international experience available to a majority of the University’s undergraduates,” says Luc Beaudoin, associate vice provost for DU’s Office of Internationalization and director of study abroad.

The Cherrington Global Scholars program allows eligible students to study abroad for the same price they would pay for tuition and fees while on the DU campus. The University helps students pay some additional costs such as transportation and fees for visa applications and insurance mandated by the host country or DU.

According to the report, 270,604 U.S. students studied abroad this past year, reflecting a 4 percent increase from the previous year. The top destination for students was the United Kingdom, followed by Italy, Spain, France and China.

DU offers more than 150 study-abroad programs in 58 nations.
