Wang Gungwu, an expert in Chinese culture and immigration, will speak at the next Bridges to the Future event, which will start at 7 p.m. on April 28 in DU’s Newman Center for the Performing Arts.
Wang, chairman of the East Asian Institute and University Professor at National University of Singapore, will deliver a speech titled “China’s Quest: A New Cultural Identity.”
“He is at the very top in the world in the study of Chinese culture, tradition and immigration of the Chinese all over the world,” says Sam Zhao, professor of international studies and executive director of DU’s Center for China-U.S. Cooperation, Zhao says. “We are so very lucky to have him come.”
Wang has written extensively on those topics, including the books Joining the Modern World: Inside and Outside China (Singapore University Press, 2000) and Don’t Leave Home: Migration and the Chinese (Singapore Times Academic Press, 2001).
“China is a rising power, not only economically, militarily and politically, but China’s culture is very important to China’s rise,” Zhao says.
Wang’s speech will round out the Bridges to the Future 2009–10 season. Bridges to the Future was created in 2002 to build a framework of programs that stimulate civic dialog and discussion among Colorado communities.
