DU’s University College has introduced a new major in the Bachelor of Arts Completion Program: global commerce and transportation.
“Transportation, whether transporting people or goods and services, is becoming a more and more important part of the global economy,” says Michael McGuire, assistant dean of University College, DU’s school for professional and continuing studies. “The need to be able to coordinate between different modes of transportation—bus, rail, airlines—is important as well.”
McGuire says the degree was developed in partnership with DU’s Intermodal Transportation Institute, which is housed at University College. The program is open to students who have at least one year of college credits. Classes can be taken online or on campus, where weeknight sessions accommodate working adults.
Students will get hands-on instruction in transportation safety and security issues, law and policy, economics and finance, international trade, logistics and supply chain topics, and transportation “modes and nodes”— the ways different types of transportation connect.
“This program is really an example of what we do at University College,” McGuire says. “We look at the different economic sectors and determine educational needs and where job growth is going to be.”
McGuire says he expects students to enroll in the program from throughout the country.
