Women’s College announces Vision Scholarship recipients

DU’s Women’s College and the Women’s Vision Foundation have named the 2010–11 Vision Scholarship recipients.

Four women will receive the scholarships: Jacquise Gary, Amy Ruppeck, Ruth Starr and Teri Thompson.

The goal of the Vision Scholarship is to support women in overcoming obstacles that might deter them from pursuing an education. The Vision Scholarships cover half-tuition throughout each student’s undergraduate career.

“I am inspired and awed by the stories and the motivation of these four women,” says Lynn Gangone, dean of the Women’s College. “I am extremely proud of the commitment and dedication they bring to their jobs, their communities and to their families.”

The Women’s College and the Women’s Vision Foundation share the idea that every woman deserves the opportunity to dream, flourish and accomplish their goals, notes Gangone.

“Until we have a society where both men and women are deeply engaged in making decisions about the important issues of the day, there need to be places that educate and empower women,” Gangone says.

Gary says the scholarship allows her to enter the dual-degree business administration program, where she’ll earn her bachelor’s and master’s degrees upon graduation.

Ruppeck, an investigator with the Economic Crime Unit of the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office from Golden, will use the scholarship to obtain a business administration degree. She says the degree will make her more competitive as she advances through her career.

Starr, a Denverite who will be the first in her family to attend college, says the scholarship will allow her to earn a law and society degree and become a health advocate.

Thompson, an office manager with Service Uniform from Englewood, will use the scholarship to obtain a degree in communication with a minor in law and society.

This year’s winners will be introduced at the 2010 Women’s Success Forum on Oct. 20.
