Jane Langdon reunited with her first love: art

Jane Langdon recently signed a two-year contract to do illustrations for the Red Hat Society, a national organization for women over 50.

After graduating with a BFA in 1967, Jane (Leland) Langdon had difficulty finding work as an artist. “There wasn’t guidance in that era,” she says. “It was sort of a tumultuous time.” It wasn’t until 15 years ago that Langdon was able to get reacquainted with her first love.

Langdon says the turning point came when she began making time for her artwork, and since then she has had more success than she thought possible. Langdon recently signed a two-year contract to do illustrations for the Red Hat Society, a national organization for women over 50. With members known for their purple wardrobes and bright red hats, the society’s fun-loving and light attitude appealed to Langdon.

“Your art is your voice into the world,” Langdon says. “I love to warm people’s hearts with my art.” Her watercolor paintings capture the joyous, often-comical escapades of the Red Hat Society women. Langdon has also found inspiration in the historic district of Niwot, Colo., where she lives. Her nostalgic watercolors of farmer’s markets, shoppers and community pancake breakfasts have been used to promote public events in the town.

Langdon says she is now fulfilling the artistic ambitions she had when she graduated. “It’s all that I ever dreamed of,” she says.
