Alumna pledges ‘Millionaire’ winnings to Women’s College

Alumna Carter Prescott will donate the winnings from her appearance on "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" to the Women's College.

Carter Prescott (BA English ’71) will be a contestant this week on ABC’s “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,” and she has pledged to donate any winnings to the Women’s College to support scholarships.

The segment featuring Prescott will air in Denver at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 17 on KMGH, channel 7. The segment originally was taped in November.

Prescott says her life has been guided by something her journalism professor, Robert Rothstein, told her: “Whatever you do in life — have fun.”

Prescott always thought it would be “fun” to compete on a game show.

So last spring, the speechwriter and public relations consultant walked 10 blocks from her apartment to the ABC studios in Manhattan and joined 100 other contestant hopefuls in the network’s cafeteria for a chance to be on “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.”

After filling out an extensive application and taking a qualifying test, Prescott, originally from Denver, was one of 10 people chosen that day to continue the audition process.

But she wasn’t a shoo-in: Prescott’s number was the last one called.

“They weren’t calling numbers in order, but they had already called No. 69 and mine was 68, so I figured it was over. I was already making my grocery list and planning my evening errands when my number was called,” she says.

The next step involved an interview and a screen test. The field was whittled down to just four people.

“Lo and behold, I made the cut,” she says. “At this point, I began to feel that if I got on the show and won money, I wanted it to count. It was an easy decision. I had recently joined the board of advisors at the Women’s College and decided that any winnings would be donated for scholarships.”
