Asian-American groups to showcase talents at annual event

Members of the DU community are invited to celebrate the artistic talents of the Asian-American community at the 4th annual “eXpressions: The Next Generation” event at 7 p.m. on May 11 in Davis Auditorium.

The event is intended to provide an outlet for aspiring performers to showcase their talents and bring attention to the artistic contributions of the Asian-American community.

Performers include: JR “JRA” Aquino, a former “American Idol” contestant and popular YouTube artist from Anchorage, Alaska; Hype 303, a Denver-area hip-hop dance crew; and Idiosingcrasies and Exit 205, DU a cappella groups.

“Through eXpressions, Asian Student Alliance would like to showcase the talent of individuals to break the stereotype that all Asians go to school to become doctors or lawyers,” says Cecilia Lee, president of DU’s Asian Student Alliance. “Asian Americans have talent, whether it’s singing, dancing or poetry. [The alliance] would like to break down those stereotypes and show people that we are not all the same and that we have our own identity within the community.”

The Asian Student Alliance is sponsoring the event along with DU’s Undergraduate Student Government Diversity Committee, Asian Alumni Association and the DU Programs Board.

“eXpressions” is free for DU students with a student ID card and $5 for non-DU students.
