Countdown to Commencement: Brooklyn Batey created new campus event for young black women

After four years at the University of Denver, senior Brooklyn Batey is graduating in June with degrees in psychology and sociolegal studies. Batey, a defender on the DU women’s lacrosse team, has had many triumphs both on and off the field.

On Feb. 12, 2016, Brooklyn organized and ran a new summit at DU for young black women in Denver. The summit, called Black Women Lead, Empower, Aspire and Dedicate (BW-LEAD), invited high school students to come together, share experiences and hear from successful black women working in the Denver area.

“Having someone to look up is really helpful,” Batey says. “It shows you what you can be, and it gives you the inspiration to be that mentor for someone else.”

DU’s spring undergraduate Commencement ceremony is at 9:30 a.m. June 4; visit the Commencement page for more information.
