Diversity summit aims to create dialogues about inclusive excellence

“Inclusive Excellence in Practice” will be the theme of DU’s 10th annual Diversity Summit on May 6. The day-long event will be open to the DU campus and the greater Denver community. Online registration begins on April 1.

The summit will feature successful diversity and inclusion practices from community and industry leaders.

Shari Slate, senior director of inclusion strategy at Cisco, will be the keynote speaker. Slate, who previously worked as chief diversity officer and director of global community affairs at Sun Microsystems, is recognized as a leader in diversity and inclusion and has spoken broadly on the topic. There also will be special sessions focused on business and industry, P-20 education, and philanthropy and community.

Joel Portman, coordinator for intergroup relations at DU’s Center for Multicultural Excellence (CME), says there are three key objectives of the event: linking research and practice; sharing best and tried practices for embedding inclusive excellence; and helping participants envision how they can practice inclusive excellence in their professional and personal lives.

“As we build on DU’s vision to be a ‘great private university dedicated to the public good,’ the Diversity Summit seeks to create a broader view of inclusive excellence,” he says. “We will all benefit from the experiences of our speakers, presenters and participants.”

The summit is being sponsored by DU and community organizations, including the CME, the Morgridge College of Education, the Daniels College of Business, the Undergraduate Student Government Diversity Committee, the Women’s Foundation of Colorado and the Denver Foundation.

The event is free for DU faculty, staff, students and alumni. There will be a nominal charge for others. Register at www.du.edu/cme/summit.html.
