Diversity Summit to address diversity and inclusiveness

“Creating Inclusive Environments” is the theme for the 9th annual University of Denver Diversity Summit on Inclusive Excellence.
The goal of the April 30 event, which is presented by DU’s Center for Multicultural Excellence and sponsored by a wide range of campus organizations, is to “create dialogue and engagement about fostering diversity and inclusiveness at DU,” says Sharon McGregor Bond, parent programs coordinator in the Office of Parent Relations and one of the Summit organizers.

“The world around us is diverse and our societies are becoming more global. As a result, we want our campus to reflect an understanding and appreciation of cultural differences,” she says. “The Diversity Summit will focus on strategies and approaches to engaging all members of the DU community in diversity and inclusiveness through effective communication, building trust and strengthening relationships.”

The keynote speaker will be Shaun Harper, assistant professor of higher education management at the University of Pennsylvania. He is the editor of the books Creating Inclusive Campus Environments for Cross-Cultural Learning and Student Engagement and Student Engagement in Higher Education: Theoretical Perspectives and Practical Approaches for Diverse Populations.

“Learning to create inclusive environments is a key aspect of education for our students and our campus and we hope to create a welcoming environment at DU for all community members,” Bond adds.

Register by April 23 at www.du.edu/cme/summit. The event is free. Those interested may participate in all or any part of the summit. The morning keynote session and all workshops will be held in Sturm Hall. The luncheon will take place in the Driscoll Ballroom and the closing chocolate fountain reception will be held in the Hotel Restaurant and Tourism Management (HRTM) building.
