Halloween came early to children in the DU neighborhood.
The DU Greek houses came together to host a Halloween Carnival in the Driscoll Ballroom on Oct. 19. More than 100 children attended and participated in a variety of games.
Shannon Winckel wanted her 18-month-old daughter, Annabelle, to have a good trick-or-treat experience. Winckel, associate director of human resources at DU, brought Annabelle to the event.
“I knew this would be a safe, comfortable environment for her,” Winckel said.
This year is the first time the Greeks have come together to host a Halloween carnival on the DU campus, said Phillippa Gile, a junior finance and accounting major and vice president of philanthropy and community services for the Hellenic Council.
“We wanted to unify the Greek houses for a community service project,” Gile said. “We wanted to reach out and have people know this is what we stand for.”
Evan Kurtis, a freshman real estate and construction management major, is a pledge of Sigma Chi. He usually participates in up to three philanthropic events every week, but this one was different, he said, because it gave Greeks the opportunity to connect with each other rather just compete.
“It’s nice to see fraternities and sororities working together,” Kurtis said. “And a lot of kids seem to be enjoying it.”
