DU names new human resources director

The University of Denver has named Amy King as its new Director of Human Resources.

King, who has been with the department for a decade and most recently served as associate director, will fill the vacancy left by Dick Gartrell, who announced his retirement last year after 11 years at the helm.

King says she’s excited about new initiatives she will lead and says she’s honored by the opportunity and thankful for the support she has enjoyed throughout her career at DU.

“This will be a challenging year invested in implementing new strategies and models within Human Resources,” she says. “We are eagerly poised to implement advancements in support of DU’s faculty and staff.”

When Gartrell announced his retirement, Chancellor Robert Coombe described a Human Resources reorganization that will focus on talent management, total rewards and employee relations and services.

“Our employees are the key ingredient in making this institution special, and we remain committed to serving our people well,” Coombe says.

Moving forward, Coombe says Human Resources will develop better communication between University administrators and the campus community.

King’s appointment stemmed from the work of a search committee that included representatives of every element of the DU community, including faculty, staff and students. The committee was led by Ginger Maloney, former dean of the Morgridge College of Education.

Craig Woody, DU’s vice chancellor for business and financial affairs, says King’s reputation across campus and throughout the industry, as well as her creative approaches to problem solving and her work ethic, were deciding factors.

“Amy has developed a stellar reputation among the University’s deans and directors through her advice and counsel in employee relations,” Woody says. “She is also highly regarded by members of the administration for her thorough and professional approach to compensation and other workforce issues.”

King, who came to DU after working in human relations at Colorado Christian University, has been responsible for employee relations, compensation, employee services, policy practices and guidelines and union matters. She serves on the board of directors at Porter Hospital and is chair-elect for the Western Region and Regional Representative for the National Board of the College and University Personnel Association for Human Resources.
