DU to celebrate inclusive excellence April 1

April Fool’s Day is known in most of the Western world as a day for having fun.

At DU, part of the fun will take place at the sixth annual Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer, Questioning and Ally (LGBTIQA) Gala, which kicks off at 5:30 p.m. April 1 in the Knoebel School of Hospitality Management.

Thomas Walker, program director for intergroup relations and LGBTIQA in DU’s Center for Multicultural Excellence, says the gala is a celebration of inclusive excellence and the University’s commitment to creating a truly welcoming campus for all social identities.

“We have a culturally and socially diverse campus community. The gala is an opportunity to motivate DU to engage that diversity even more, and equally as important, to celebrate individual and collective achievements in making DU more inclusive for our LGBTIQA communities,” Walker says.

He’s not joking either. The “fun” includes a Lamont School of Music student performance, a drag queen hostess, awards and refreshments. The event is free.

The gala has a serious side as well. Organizers will recognize individuals and groups who have contributed to greater LGBTIQA awareness, visibility and equity. Nominations are still being taken by emailing lgbtiqa@du.edu.
