Fraternity hosts annual Mustache Bash for charity

This week, DU students will try to get a handle on the hairy job of growing a mustache and don their funkiest disco attire for what promises to be much more than an average college theme party.

Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity’s seventh annual Mustache Bash will be held at 9 p.m. March 31 at the Gothic Theatre in Englewood, Colo. Fraternity leaders hope to raise more than $20,000 for the National Sports Center for the Disabled (NSCD).

The 1970s-themed event features local bands Kinetix and The Foot. Alumni are members of both groups. The Crimson and Gold Tavern also will host pre- and post-concert festivities with food and drinks.

“It’s a great event that raises an exceptional amount of money for NSCD, and it’s all put on by the students,” says Ben Hillman, co-chairman of Lambda Chi Alpha’s Mustache Bash committee.

The event initially was modeled after other charity events in which men raised money by growing and shaving mustaches.

“Since college men are not such great growers of mustaches, that part of the fundraising was not very successful,” Hillman says. “So our fundraising focus became the benefit concert.”

All proceeds for the event will benefit NSCD — a nonprofit organization that allows children and adults with disabilities to participate in more than 20 therapeutic outdoor sports and recreational activities.

“The National Sports Center for the Disabled provides our fraternity with the opportunity to help those in need through the outlet of sports,” says Karsten Gucinski, philanthropy chair for Lambda Chi Alpha.

Lambda Chi Alpha’s other major fundraising event is Ski for NSCD in Winter Park, Colo. The event involves an online fundraiser and a weekend in which fraternity brothers help children and adults with disabilities learn how to ski.

The Mustache Bash is open to the public. Tickets are $25 and will be sold March 28–29 on the Driscoll Bridge or outside of Sturm Hall. For more information about Mustache Bash, visit www.denverlambdachi.org.
