Investigation continues in minor lab fire

An investigation into the cause of a minor fire that broke out yesterday afternoon in an unoccupied chemistry teaching lab in Boettcher Center West on the DU campus is ongoing.

The damage is estimated at less than $50,000. The building has reopened but it’s unknown how long the lab will be closed.

There were no classes in session in the vicinity at the time the fire erupted. Some students in the area heard a small explosion and extinguished the blaze, which was confined to a chemical hood.

No students were injured, but two campus safety officers suffered minor smoke inhalation and were transported to Porter Hospital for treatment and later released.
