No students injured in minor lab fire

A minor fire erupted at 4:40 p.m. today in an unoccupied chemistry teaching lab in Boettcher Center West on the DU campus. There were no classes in session in the vicinity at the time.

No students were injured, but two campus safety officers suffered minor smoke inhalation and were transported to Porter Hospital for treatment.

Graduate teaching assistant Justin Barba was working in a nearby lab when he said he heard a small explosion. He located the source and extinguished the blaze, which was confined to a chemical hood.

The Denver Fire Department responded to the incident. Fire officials are still investigating the cause of the blaze.

Damage estimates have not been released.

Classes in the building are slated to resume on Friday, Oct. 20.
