Sports, music and dance on tap for campus over the holidays

Nov. 23 marks the end of the fall quarter for the University of Denver, but campus won’t be completely empty. Three varsity teams have games, and the Newman Center for the Performing Arts will be abuzz with holiday concerts by national and local performers from ballet to brass bands.

ATHLETICS

Men’s Basketball: Cheer on the men’s basketball team as it takes on Wyoming on Dec. 3; Air Force on Dec. 5; Weber State on Dec. 13; and Eastern Washington on Dec. 20.

Women’s Basketball: Rally behind the DU ladies as they take on Wyoming on Dec. 9; the University of Illinois at Chicago on Dec. 17; Colorado State on Dec. 20; Long Beach on Dec. 28; and South Dakota State on Dec. 30.

Hockey: The men’s hockey team faces St. Cloud on Dec. 11 and Dec. 12.

 

MUSIC AND DANCE

Belliston Ballet: The “premier Denver dance academy” will perform Tchaikovsky’s holiday classic, “The Nutcracker,” at 7 p.m. Nov. 27, 2 and 7 p.m. Nov. 28 and 1 p.m. Nov. 29.

The Boston Brass: The Newman Center Presents series’ 2015 holiday concert teams the Boston ensemble with brass stars from Denver to present “Christmas Bells are Swingin’!” at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 2.

International Youth Ballet: More than 100 talented young dancers from the Denver-based youth ballet company will present their production of “The Nutcracker” at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 4 and 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. Dec. 5.

Young Voices of Colorado: The Denver-based Children’s Chorale — featuring 180 singers, ages 7–18 — performs its winter concert at 4 p.m. Dec. 6.

Lorie Line & Her Fab Five: The Minneapolis-based classical/pop pianist presents “Christmas in the City” at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 8.

Sound of the Rockies: The 100-plus-voice men’s a cappella chorus — a five-time repeat medalist in the Barbershop Harmony Society’s annual chorus competition — performs its holiday concert, “Winter Wonderland,” at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 11 and 2 and 7:30 p.m. Dec. 12.

Annual Carillon Holiday Recital: Across campus from the Newman Center, DU carillonneur Carol Jickling Lens will perform her annual free holiday concert at 3 p.m. Dec. 13 at the Williams Carillon at the Ritchie Center, 2240 E. Buchtel Blvd. A video camera will show how the carillon is played, and a reception follows the concert.

Cherry Creek Dance: The Denver-based dance school presents its annual December recital, “Welcome to New York” — featuring performers from ages 2–82 performing in styles ranging from ballet, tap and jazz to hip-hop and breakdance — at 12:15, 3 and 5:45 p.m. Dec. 13.

Denver Brass: The 14-member horn group — one of just a few professional large brass ensembles in the world — presents its holiday show, “Feels Like Christmas” at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Dec. 19 and 2 p.m. Dec. 20.
