Student concert raises money for flood relief

Four University of Denver graduate students are hosting a classical music concert Nov. 7 to raise funds for the Longmont Humane Society.

The group chose to partner with the humane society because of the organization’s direct assistance to the community in the wake of the historic floods that laid waste to many areas in northern Colorado in September.

During the flooding, the humane society worked with more than 235 animals brought to them by animal control, private owners and community members. All the proceeds from the Nov. 7 concert go to the facility’s Now and Forever Campaign, which re-funds operating costs that have been badly depleted.

The event idea came from a class project in the Daniels College of Business. Ben Gerig, a candidate for the Graduate Business Certificate in Management, came up with the idea and is heading up coordination of the event. (Gerig is also an external communications specialist in the University’s Division of Marketing and Communications.)

“Without his energy and enthusiasm, this event would not be taking place,” says host Harrison Fried, a Daniels MA student.

Fellow graduate students Niki Jin and Emily Jin also are hosting the event. The group is hoping to raise at least $3,000 for the humane society.

The concert features the Lamont String Quartet, plus performances by two special guest vocalists also studying at the University’s Lamont School of Music. Guests can also enjoy catered appetizers and nonalcoholic refreshments throughout the evening.

“This is a opportunity for the DU community to support an extraordinary cause by coming together to enjoy some enchanting music,” Fried says. “Being able to assist our neighbors up the road following this catastrophic natural disaster is an honor.”

The “Strings at Twilight” Flood Relief Concert runs from 4:30-6 p.m. Nov. 7 in the Renaissance Room in the Mary Reed Building, 2199 S. University Blvd. Donations will be accepted at the door; participants can RSVP online.
