Though students leave for winter break in late November, the University of Denver still is abuzz with holiday activities and Pioneer athletic events between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Ten local and national groups will perform holiday shows at the Newman Center for the Performing Arts throughout November and December, and four athletic teams will be competing over break.

Belliston Ballet: The “premiere Denver dance academy” will perform Tchaikovsky’s holiday classic, the “Nutcracker,” at 2 and 7 p.m. Nov. 24 and at 1 and 4 p.m. Nov. 25.
International Youth Ballet: More than 100 talented young dancers from the Denver-based youth ballet company will present their production of the “Nutcracker” at 2:30 and 7 p.m. Dec. 1.
Young Voices of Colorado: The Denver-based Children’s Chorale — featuring five children’s choirs and 200 singers, ages 7-17 — performs its winter concert, “Let Me Know Beauty,” at 4 p.m. Dec. 2.
Rocky Mountain School of Dance: The dance school will present its 21st annual “A Christmas Story,” told through the art of dance, at 7 p.m. Dec. 4.
Cantus: As part of the Newman Center Presents series, the male vocal ensemble returns to the venue to perform “All is Calm,” a program inspired by actual historical events during World War I on Christmas, 1914. A young German soldier stepped into No Man’s Land singing “Stille Nacht” (“Silent Night”). Thus began an extraordinary night of camaraderie, music, and brief peace. This collaboration between Cantus and Theater Latté Da is done in the style of a radio musical drama. After intermission, Cantus will sing traditional holiday fare.
Cleo Parker Robinson Dance: “Granny Dances to a Holiday Drum,” performed by the nonprofit dance company, has become a Christmas tradition in Denver. Dancers from Robinson’s company join with musicians and spoken-word artists to perform pieces influenced by the African Harvest, the Native American Winter Solstice, Las Posadas in Mexico, the ancient Hebrew Festival of Lights, Junkanoo in the Caribbean and more in this celebration of holiday traditions around the world. Shows are at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 7, 8, 14, 15, 21 and 22; and 2 p.m. on Dec. 8, 15, 16, 22 and 23.
Sound of the Rockies: The 100-plus-voice men’s a cappella chorus — a five-time repeat medalist in the Barbershop Harmony Society’s annual chorus competition — performs its holiday concert, “Winter Wonderland,” at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 7 and 8 and 2 p.m. Dec. 8.
DU Holiday Carillon Concert: Across campus from the Newman Center, DU Carillonneur Carol Jickling Lens will perform her annual free holiday concert at 3 p.m. Dec. 9 at the Williams Carillon at the Ritchie Center, 2240 E. Buchtel Blvd. Choirs from South High School will join Carol for the concert.
Lorie Line & Her Fab Five: The Minneapolis-based classical/pop pianist presents her 2012 holiday extravaganza, “Immanuel,” at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 11.
Classical Ballet of Colorado: The nationally recognized dance studio presents its version of the “Nutcracker” at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Dec. 15.
Cherry Creek Dance: Young dancers from the Denver-based school will stage their winter recital, “Dance Around the World,” featuring ballet, jazz, tap, hip-hop and lyrical performances, at 9:30 a.m. and 12:15, 3 and 5:45 p.m. Dec. 16.
DU Hockey: Cheer on the Pioneers hockey team when they face Yale University on Nov. 23; New Hampshire on Nov. 24; and Wisconsin on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1.
Women’s Basketball: Support the women’s team at Magness Arena on Nov. 29 when they play Northern Colorado; Dec. 8 against the Air Force Academy; and Dec. 11 against the University of Colorado.
Men’s Basketball: Rally for the men’s team on Dec. 5 when they play Mercer; Dec. 15 against Nebraska-Omaha; and Dec. 21 against Southern Utah.
Gymnastics: The DU gymnastics team has its intrasquad meet at 6 p.m. Dec. 15 at Hamilton Gymnasium.
