See some of Italy’s best films for free April 6 through May 18
The University of Denver (DU) Italian program in the Department of Languages and Literatures is hosting the 1st Annual Italian Film Festival April 6 through May 18. The Denver festival will premiere five recent Italian films, sponsored by the Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago and the Consulate General of Italy in Chicago.
All films will be shown in Italian with English subtitles. Admission is free and open to the public. Each film will be shown at 6:30 p.m. in Davis Auditorium in Sturm Hall at DU on the specified date.
The films are: Si può fare (We Can Do That) by Guilio Manfredonia on Tues., April 6 (111 min.); Il papà di Giovanna (Giovanna’s Father) by Pupi Avati, on Wed., April 14 (104 min.); Valzer (The Waltz) by Salvatore Maira, on Tues., April 20 (90 min.); La ragazza del lago (The Girl by the Lake) by Andrea Molaioli on Wed., April 28 (95 minutes); EX (Many Kisses Later)by Fausto Brizzi on Tues., May 18.

Si può fare was nominated as the 2009 Best Italian Film. It is about a Milanese businessman who lost his job and finds himself managing a cooperative of former mental patients. He encourages everyone to learn a trade, inventing a role for each of them that is amazingly adapted to their abilities.
In La ragazza del lago, a police inspector, who recently moved to a small Northeastern town in Italy, must investigate an emotionally charged crime with his younger colleague in this close-knit community. The film was winner of the 2008 Best Italian Film.
The film EX begins with many declarations of love and lots of kisses, but asks if loves goes on and if a couple can live happily ever after. It was nominated as the 2009 Best Film.
