Background
Seth Masket studies American political parties at the local, state, and national level. His dissertation, “A Party by Other Means: The Rise of Informal Party Organizations in California,” examined the alliances of activists, donors, and officeholders that today function as unofficial parties, helping their preferred candidates win nominations and preventing others from doing so. Masket has written on state budget battles, local party organizations, campaigns, term limits, redistricting, and open primaries and other reforms to the party nomination process. He teaches courses on campaigns, parties, and state and local politics. Prior to his academic career, Masket was a senior writer in the White House Office of Correspondence under President Clinton. He has additional experience working in campaigns and government at the state and local level.
