Former Trustee Phil Hogue dies

Longtime DU Trustee Phil Hogue died Feb. 20 after battling leukemia. He was 71.

Hogue had a long career in banking and later worked for Bill Daniels at Daniels & Associates. In 1998, he came out of retirement to assist Daniels in developing the Daniels Fund, which is now the largest foundation in Colorado and one of the larger independent foundations in the U.S.

Hogue was a DU trustee from 1990–2006. He chaired the Pioneers athletics affairs committee in the 1990s and was interim athletics director from 1995–96. He played a leading role in helping DU athletics transition to Division I.

Hogue was born in Denver on July 22, 1935, and was a third-generation Coloradan. He attended St. Joseph’s High School and went to Stanford University on an athletics scholarship for tennis.

Hogue is survived by Dene, his wife of 47 years, four children, four grandchildren and two sisters. The Hogue family will have a private memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, they request that tribute donations be made to the Smile Train, a charitable organization providing free cleft surgery for needy children around the world. Visit www.smiletrain.org to learn more about the organization.
