Kwan, Rice chosen to serve on presidential delegation for Olympics

President George W. Bush has chosen a seven-member delegation — including two who have ties to DU — to represent the United States at the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games in Beijing on August 24, the White House announced today.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice (BA ’74, PhD ’81) will lead the delegation. Figure skating champion Michelle Kwan, the state department’s American public diplomacy envoy, will accompany Rice on the trip.

Kwan is enrolled as a student in international studies with a minor in political science.

Other members of the Olympic delegation include:
•    Elaine Chao, secretary of labor
•    Michael Leavitt, secretary of health and human services
•    Clark T. Randt, Jr., United States ambassador to the People’s Republic of China
•    Karen Hughes, global vice chair of Burson-Marsteller
•    Peter Ueberroth, president of the United States Olympic Committee
