“Andy Warhol in Colorado,” an eagerly awaited show featuring photographs and films by the pop-art legend, will open in the winter of 2010 in DU’s Victoria H. Myhren Gallery in the Shwayder Art Building.
But before that, the gallery will feature displays of innovative photography, digital art, paintings and more as part of its 2009–10 exhibition calendar.
Opening the 2009–10 Myhren series from Sept. 24 to Oct. 31, 2009, is “The Family Stage: Photographs by Janet Delaney, Todd Hido, and Cecil McDonald Jr.” The exhibition looks at family life from a number of artistic perspectives, including “Ohio,” a series of 20 Instamatic photographs by Hido; Delaney’s still-life series “Housebound,” and “Domestic Observations and Occurrences,” a collection of autobiographical images by McDonald Jr. An opening reception will be held Sept. 24.
“John Edward Thompson: Colorado Modernist” runs Nov. 12, 2009–Jan. 17, 2010. The first in a series of practicum-based exhibitions curated by museum-studies students, the exhibit includes paintings, sketches and drawings by Thompson, who served on the DU faculty from 1929 until his death in 1945. The opening reception is Nov. 12; the gallery will be closed Dec. 19–Jan. 3.
Up next is “Citizen,” a digital-video installation by Cliff Evans, which runs from Jan. 7–Feb. 21, 2010, with an opening reception on Jan. 7. Evans constructs digital collages out of a wide range of still and moving images pulled from the Internet to comment on issues of celebrity and power in modern American society.
Other shows on the Myhren Gallery’s 2009–10 schedule include “Faculty Collects” (April 1–25, 2010), featuring pieces from the personal collections of faculty and staff at DU’s School of Art & Art History; practicum-based exhibitions “American Master Watercolors From the Jan Perry Collection” (April 1–25, 2010) and “Contemporary Art From the Jim Taylor Collection” (Feb. 11–March 7, 2010), highlighting pieces from the collections of the local arts patrons; and “The 2010 BFA Exhibition” (May 13–June 5), featuring work by graduating seniors from DU’s programs in studio art and electronic media and design.
Early in 2009, the Myhren Gallery received more than 150 original Polaroid and gelatin silver prints by Warhol as part of a gift from the Andy Warhol Foundation to 183 college and university art galleries and museums across the nation. “Andy Warhol in Colorado,” (opening date to be announced) will feature photographs, films and other artworks by Warhol drawn from the Warhol Foundation gift and from many Colorado collections. Works by Denver-based artists with direct connections to Warhol’s fabled Factory studio in New York City also will be included.
The show originally was slated to begin in January 2009 but the Warhol works arrived at DU later than anticipated.
