As the federal government cracks down on medical marijuana dispensaries in California this week, Dr. Sam Kamin, a professor of law at the University of Denver, is keeping a close eye on this new policy direction and is available to discuss the issues with reporters following these new developments.
Kamin predicts the recent shut down of dispensaries in California signifies a major change in federal policy that will impact clinics everywhere operating under state laws that differ from federal rules.
“It’s the beginning of the end,” says Kamin of legal dispensaries. “I think the federal government turned a blind eye for a time, but now this is the end. They aren’t going to allow them any longer.”
Kamin has spent years watching the growing debate over marijuana legalization. Colorado, much like California, has recognized the legal operation of medical marijuana clinics. Scores of clinics are open across the Colorado, including some just off the DU campus.
Kamin has hosted panel discussions on the legalization of marijuana for medical use, and predicts Colorado will become the next battleground for outright legalization.
Kamin holds a PhD in public policy and a law degree from the University of California Berkeley. He teaches criminal justice and procedure at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law.
