The Clock is ticking: The Debt Ceiling showdown

The University of Denver has experts available related to various government shutdown issues, including personal experience in a government shutdown and a book in progress on the issue:

Seth Masket, Political Science Assistant Professor: Professor Masket was working in the White House during the 1995 shutdown and was classified as “nonessential,” receiving a month off. He is an expert on American political system, specifically political parties and state and local politics. He holds a Ph.D. in political science from the University of California, Los Angeles. Peter Hanson, Political Science Assistant Professor: “Any long-term economic damage will ultimately hurt the president and his chance to win re-election,” Hanson says. “The real issue here is not the design of our government, but the polarization of our political parties. They have been captured by the most extreme voices in society and are more concerned about keeping the support of their bases than doing what is right for the public.” Professor Hanson is working on a book on how government shutdowns affect the political parties. He is an expert in American Politics. Maclyn Clouse, Finance Professor at the Daniels College of Business: “The message that the U.S. sends to the rest of the world is that our economy is unstable, we can’t be trusted to fulfill our obligations, and it may suggest that we may be very risky,” said Clouse. Professor Clouse offers expertise in financial and economic environments, investing, revenues, cost and business models and banking. He holds a Ph.D. in finance from the University of Washington. He is particularly adept at explaining complex financial situations in lay terms and can address the overall financial impact of the shutdown on communities, state and regional governments and the U.S. economy. Robert McGowan, Professor of Management at the Daniels College of Business: Professor McGowan is a consultant to the Governor’s Office in Colorado and can address the issue of the government shutdown public policy issues as well as its economic burden.
