Lamont Faculty Piano Trio concert pays tribute to the late Jane Anderson Saul

The Lamont Faculty Piano Trio, featuring Linda Wang, violin; Richard Slavich, cello; and Alice Rybak, piano, perform Jan. 20 in the last of a series of three concerts that pay tribute to the late Jane Anderson Saul (1929-2004).

“Jane was a music activist,” says her husband, Max Saul, a Lamont donor. “Chamber music was a particular love of hers.”

Max commissioned the Lamont Faculty Piano Trio to perform concerts that feature the repertoire of the Beaux Arts Trio, a favorite group of Jane’s.

The program opens with Elegie, a lament by Josef Suk. “This seven-minute piece is Wagner as chamber music,” Slavich says. “It’s charged with super-heated emotions.”

Following the Suk is Beethoven’s Ghost Trio, “named for its eerie subterranean sounds,” according to Slavich. The concert concludes with Ravel’s Piano Trio, which is a “high water mark of impressionistic color techniques,” Slavich says. “The fourth movement sounds like splashes of color across a canvas.”

The concert is at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 20 in Hamilton Recital Hall at the Newman Center for the Performing Arts. A reception with the artists follows the concert. Tickets are $21 for adults and $19 for seniors; admission is free for students from any school (with ID) and all DU Pioneer Card holders. Tickets are available at the Newman Center box office or may be reserved online or over the phone for a small service charge at www.newmantix.com or 303-871-7720. Parking is free at the Newman Center parking garage with entrance from East Wesley Avenue.
