Lamont students to perform Puccini operas

Peer into the final years of grand-scale Italian opera and its final master Giacomo Puccini when the Lamont Opera Theatre and the Lamont Opera Program present two, one-act Puccini operas, Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi, April 14–17 at DU’s Newman Center for the Performing Arts.

Suor Angelica is a beautiful, dramatic score that tells the story of a young woman’s tragic separation from her son, who was born out of wedlock,” says Kenneth Cox, director of Lamont Opera Theatre and chair of Lamont’s Vocal and Opera Department. “The music is lyric and exotic in nature, capturing the life of a late 17th century convent. Gianni Schicchi, on the other hand, is a comic romp. The relatives of Buoso Donati are tricked by the clever Schicchi as he helps them to change Donati’s will while claiming the most desirable items for himself.”

The Lamont Opera Theatre will be joined by the Lamont Opera Program under the direction of Lawrence Golan.

“This pairing has produced a number of outstanding productions over the past decade and this year will be no exception. The students who are playing in the orchestra, singing leading roles, as well as those in the chorus, will represent Lamont and DU with distinction,” Cox adds.

Performances will be held April 14, 15 and 16 at 7:30 p.m. and April 17 at 2:30 p.m. Purchase tickets online at Ticketmaster or through the Newman Center Box Office at 303-871-7720 or 1-800-982-ARTS. Free parking is available at the Newman Center parking garage. For more information, call 303-871-6412.
