Lamont Symphony Orchestra to commemorate 9/11

Lawrence Golan conducts the Lamont Symphony Orchestra.

The Lamont Symphony Orchestra under the direction of conductor Lawrence Golan will present a concert in commemoration of the 10-year anniversary of September 11th.

The concert is a collaboration of the Lamont School of Music and the Bridges to the Future lecture series as part of the series’ continuing programming surrounding the theme 9/11: Ten Years After.

The concert will take place 7:30 p.m. Feb. 10 at the Newman Center for the Performing Arts.

The concert will begin with the poem “The Dead of September 11” by Toni Morrison. This will be followed by the Colorado premiere of This Thread, a musical setting of Morrison’s poem by composer J. Mark Scearce. This Thread will feature Metropolitan Opera mezzo-soprano Judith Christin as well as Yumi Hwang-Williams, Lamont School of Music violin faculty member and concertmaster of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra.

After intermission, the group will play Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 7 “Leningrad,” which has been associated with the German attack and invasion of Russia in 1941.
