The game is known as “Gotcha,” “Killer,” “Fireball” and “Lightning.” At the University of Denver, it’s called Knockout. And to raise money for the Food Bank of the Rockies, DU is trying to host the world’s largest game of many names.
“By partnering with the Food Bank of the Rockies to have this event, it is our hope that we can provide some support for their efforts around the holidays,” says Paul Pogge, assistant athletic director for strategic planning & partnerships. “We are very proud of our relationship with the Food Bank of the Rockies.”
Organizers hope to break the record, which the Guinness Book of World Records says is game of 100 participants. Knockout is a basketball game in which players try to “knock out” other players by shooting baskets. Complete rules can be found on Wikipedia. In DU’s game, players will be randomly placed on teams of 10.
The game will take place from 11 a.m.–2 p.m. Oct. 30. at DU’s Hamilton Gymnasium. Participants are encouraged to donate $1, which will be used to provide four meals for hungry families in the Denver area.
The event is open to all ages. Each participant will receive four free tickets to the Denver men’s basketball game against Alcorn State on Nov. 24 and four tickets to the Denver women’s basketball game against Air Force on Dec. 8.
“We are excited about the upcoming basketball season for our men’s and women’s team because we believe they are both on the verge of being great teams,” Pogge says.
Winners will advance to the semifinals prior to the Denver men’s basketball game on Nov. 24 against Alcorn State. Semifinalists will play until the group is narrowed to 10, who will then play at halftime of Denver’s game. Winners will be presented with trophies.
