DU women’s soccer team captures NCAA College Cup

The Pioneers women’s soccer team made history on Friday when it defeated Kentucky 2-0 in its first NCAA Women’s College Cup win. It was DU’s sixth straight shutout and 15th consecutive win.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling,” says junior midfielder Jenna Billingsley. “It’s great to continue DU’s soccer tradition.”

The Pioneers controlled the first half at Prentup Field at the University of Colorado in Boulder.

Billingsley made the Pioneers’ first goal when she took a pass from sophomore Dana Schonberger, putting the Pioneers ahead 1-0.

Minutes later, senior forward Lleane Grimditch put in DU’s second goal when she stole the ball inside Kentucky’s box and slipped it passed the Wildcat goalkeeper to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead.

The Pioneers prevented Kentucky from making a shot in the second half en route to its 14th shutout of the season.

Senior goalkeeper Dani Wiley needed two saves to notch her 50th career win and launch her to the top of the program’s all-time goalkeeper wins list. The shutout was Wiley’s eighth of the season.

The Pioneers will play the winner of Colorado vs. Colorado College on Nov. 12 at noon in Boulder. This is the first time any Sun Belt Conference team has ever advanced this far in the NCAA Women’s College Cup.
