Men’s, women’s lacrosse teams advance in postseason; next games on Saturday

Led by a five-point effort from senior Cameron Flint, the top-seeded University of Denver men’s lacrosse team defeated the No. 4 seeded Fairfield University Stags 10–8 in Thursday evening at Boswell Field in Geneva, N.Y. The Eastern College Athletic Conference Tournament win advances the Pioneers to the Championship game on Saturday at 2 p.m. MT. Denver will face either Loyola or Ohio State. The game will be live on Fox Sports Network, ROOT Sports Rocky Mountain, Fox College Sports and FUEL TV.

“I am so proud of this team because they did not give up at any point in this game today,” said DU head coach Bill Tierney. “Even when Fairfield came back to tie it twice late in the game, these guys really rallied around each other, and you could tell that they had the will to win. I also thought our goalie play was really good tonight with Ryan and Jamie in the net.”

The women’s lacrosse team, meanwhile, notched a 17–11 victory over Southern California Thursday in the semifinals of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation at the University of Oregon.

“USC is a great team, and we were really happy to earn the win,” 2013 MPSF Coach of the Year Liza Kelly said. “I am really proud of this team for handling everything thrown at them today.”

The Pioneers, who extended their team-record winning streak to 15 games, next face No. 3 seed Stanford in the MPSF Championship, which will be played Saturday at 2 p.m. MT. The winner of the MPSF title earns an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.
