On May 7, the University of Denver women’s club lacrosse team won the 2016 Women’s Club Lacrosse Association (WCLA) Division II National Championships, gaining a national title for the first time since the team’s 2008 inception.
The final game took place in Winston-Salem, N.C., where DU defeated the University of Utah in sudden-death overtime with a final score of 11-10. Freshman Kaitlin Ball scored the final goal.
Ball, an attack player, has been on the team since the fall and intends to remain for her next three years at DU.
“My favorite part of the team is getting to know all of the players,” Ball says. “There are 28 of us total, and it’s awesome to be able to be close with girls in other grades; it really has helped to open my DU experience so far.”
The team goal for the season was to win the championship, and head coach Mindy Stone is proud of the team’s personal victory.
“The girls have worked extremely hard this year, and everyone was very committed,” Stone says. “They are such a talented group of women who always give 100 percent on and off the field. They make my job very easy.”
For the club team, practice starts in the fall and continues throughout the academic year. The team practices two to three times a week and has most of its games in the spring. The club team is not affiliated with the DU varsity women’s lacrosse team.
“The team is pretty relaxed,” Ball says. “We have a lot of fun.”
