Larry Glenn will perform in concert on Nov. 13.
Larry Glenn, a DU associate professor of voice, will celebrate his 25th anniversary at the Lamont School of Music with a recital titled “A Silver Celebration of 25 years at Lamont.”
Glenn will be joined by a consort of his Lamont colleagues: Kate Emerich, soprano; Lawrence Golan, violin; Pamela Endsley, flute; Sarah Bierhaus, oboe; Richard Slavich, cello; and Hukum Singh, harpsichord.
The program features one of Glenn’s favorite composers, Benjamin Britten. Glenn will perform Britten’s Canticle I, My Beloved is Mine and I am His. Olivier Messiaen’s La mort du nombre also is on the program.
“Here is a metaphysical dialogue between two souls fixed on the moment of transfiguration,” Glenn says of the Messiaen work. “The untransformed soul is in purgatory with all the torments of being separated from his beloved, who has already attained spiritual peace and dwells on a heavenly plain. Her soothing words finally give way to the beautiful, sounds of a wordless heavenly violin. Personally, I think this is one of the most beautiful works ever created in the annals of music.”
Glenn says his voice will grow in intensity through the recital, from the heady voix-mixture vocal production of the Baroque period through the English warmth of Britten and then the full romantic torture of the Messiaen to the more operatic full-throated utterances of Bizet and Mascagni.
“I chose this progression of vocal growth in order to give several styles of singing through the evening,” Glenn says.
The recital is a 5 p.m. Nov. 13 in Hamilton Recital Hall at the Newman Center for the Performing Arts. A reception will follow in the Spencer Room. Tickets are $21 for adults and $19 for seniors.
