Law Professor Alan Chen, associate dean for faculty scholarship, presented “Meaningful Access to Constitutional Remedies” at the Sturm College of Law Access to Justice Conference on April 23, 2010.
Law Adjunct Professor David Kopel co-authored an article, “How Many Global Deaths from Arms? Reasons to Question the 740,000 Factoid Being Used to Promote the Arms Trade Treaty,” in the NYU Journal of Law & Liberty, No. 3. On April 28, 2010, he debated the constitutionality of federal health care reform at the University of Colorado Law School.
Eli Wald, the Charles W. Delaney Jr. Professor of Law, presented “Using Deception in Intellectual Property Related-Investigations: Are You Unwittingly Violating The Colorado Rules of Professional Conduct?” at the Colorado Bar Association on April 1, 2010. On April 9, he presented “Judges, (in) Civility and the Media, Judicial Ethics and Accountability: At Home and Abroad” at the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento, Calif. Wald presented “Ethics of Attorney Communications” at the Denver Bar Association Bench/Bar Retreat on April 10. He presented “Jack Abramoff Exposed: The Integrity of the Legal/Lobbying Profession in a Money Culture” in Denver on April 12 and “Lawyers in Practice: Ethical Decision Making in Context” at the Buffalo Law School on April 23. Also in April, he published “Glass-ceilings and Dead Ends: Professional Ideologies, Gender Stereotypes and the Future of Women Lawyers at Large Law Firms” in the Fordham Law Review 2245. Wald’s essay “The Great Recession and the Legal Profession” was published in the Fordham Law Review 2051 in April as well.
Law Associate Professor Kris Miccio published an essay, “A Review of Prosecuting Domestic Violence Cases,” in the International Criminal Law Journal. This spring, Miccio received the European Commission’s Marie Curie Transfer of Knowledge Fellowship, a Fulbright Senior Specialist Award and a PROF Grant. Miccio co-presented “Lesbian Parenting: Same or Different” at the Sturm College of Law Motherhood Conference in March 2010.
On March 19, 2010, Law Professor Steve Pepper gave the keynote address, “Three Dichotomies In Lawyers’ Ethics,” at the 32nd Legal Ethics Institute at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, V.A.
Ann Vessels, lecturer and director of the Legal Externship Program at the Sturm College of Law, co-presented “Designing Externship Courses in Specialized Areas and Class Content that Engages Students” at the Externships V Conference in Miami on March 5, 2010.
Law Associate Professor Rachel Arnow-Richman had an article, “Just Notice: Re-reforming Employment At Will,” accepted for publication in the October 2010 issue of the UCLA Law Review.
Glenn Mueller, professor in the Burns School of Real Estate and Construction Management, received the 2010 Richard Ratcliff Award from the American Real Estate Society. The award recognizes Mueller’s innovative research on commercial real estate market cycles.
History Associate Professor Susan Schulten has received a Guggenheim Fellowship. The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation selects approximately 220 fellows each year from among at least 3,500 applicants.
Peter Van Arsdale, senior lecturer at the Korbel School of International Studies, is co-author of a new grant from the Office of Naval Research. The grant will enable evaluation of collaborations among NGOs and military personnel in Djibouti, Ethiopia, and Timor-Leste, specifically regarding humanitarian outreach to at-risk populations. Aided by Korbel students, Van Arsdale will then develop strategies to improve outreach within the health, water, and food security sectors. The grant complements Van Arsdale’s forthcoming book, co-authored with Derrin Smith—Humanitarians in Hostile Territory: Expeditionary Diplomacy and Aid Outside the Green Zone (Left Coast Press, May 2010).
Cheryl Lovell, associate dean at the Morgridge College of Education, has been appointed chief academic officer for Colorado’s Department of Higher Education effective April 1, 2010.
On April 1, 2010, Fred Cheever, associate dean of academic affairs at the Sturm College of Law, was a panelist at “Fire in the Eastern United States: A Legal and Cultural History,” a symposium at Penn State University.
On April 2, 2010, Jonathan Adelman, a professor at the Korbel School of International Studies, presented “The Rise of Israel: A History of a Revolutionary State” to the Alaska World Affairs Council in Anchorage, Alaska.
The Legal Writing Institute has elected David Thomson to its board of directors. Thompson teaches lawyering practice and directs the legal writing program at the Sturm College of Law.
