University of Denver students celebrate 40 years of Earth Day with 30 days of events during the month of April. There will be a special day of events on Earth Day, April 22.
Starting April 7th the “Why Should I Bother… ” campaign begins. The poster campaign will highlight reasons why students should drive less, conserve water, conserve electricity and recycle. Students plan to work a day in the Permaculture Garden near DU’s Cherrington Hall starting at 10 a.m. April 10.
On Earth Day, the DU Sustainability Committee will host a summit exploring the causes, consequences and cures for the environmental crisis. Speakers include Alice Madden, the governor’s climate change coordinator, Johnny 5 and Brer Rabbit from the Flobots, together with other environmental advocates in Colorado. The event is scheduled for 9 a.m. at the Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management building. Attendees can register at the event Web site and sign up for a topic in break-out sessions.
Kumi Naidoo, executive director of Greenpeace International, will speak at DU at 6 p.m. April 26 at DU’s Sturm Hall. The Division of Arts Humanities and Social Sciences is hosting the event along with the Center for Sustainability at the Daniels College of Business.
Naidoo will speak about the changes he believes civil society should make in order to save the planet. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is requested because of limited seating. To RSVP, visit the DU Alumni Relations Web site.
On April 29, DU Housing and Residential Education and the DU Environmental Team are offering compact fluorescent light bulbs in exchange for old incandescent light bulbs. Bring incandescent bulbs to the Driscoll Green between 11 a.m.–1 p.m. or to Nelson or Centennial Halls dining area between 5–7 p.m. Free replacement bulbs will be handed out while supplies last.
