Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright presents DU award to Rice

DENVER – The University of Denver’s Josef Korbel School of International Studies honored former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, MillerCoors CEO Leo Kiely and his wife Reverend Susan Kiely, and J. Landis Martin, founder and managing director of Platte River Ventures at the 13th annual Korbel Dinner on Aug. 27. Secretary Rice also delivered the dinner’s keynote address.

Named for Josef Korbel—who founded the school in 1964—the event honors his humanitarian and scholarly ideals as well as its graduates and others in Colorado. Korbel is the father of Madeleine Albright, 64th U.S. Secretary of State.

Secretary Rice—66th U.S. Secretary of State—is a distinguished alumna of the Josef Korbel School and will receive the 2010 Josef Korbel Outstanding Alumni Award. Secretary Albright will present the award to Rice.

Leo Kiely, CEO of MillerCoors, received the 2010 University of Denver International Bridge Builders Award for his leadership in spearheading the joint venture between Coors Brewing Company and Miller Brewing Company, making MillerCoors the second largest beer company in the United States. Also receiving the award was Reverend Susan Kiely for her work as the Founder of Women With A Cause, an international organization encouraging self reliance and providing business skills to groups of vulnerable women throughout the world.

J. Landis Martin, founder and managing director of Platte River Ventures, chairman of the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation, vice chair of the Denver Art Museum and chairman emeritus of the Central City Opera House Association, was honored with the Josef Korbel Humanitarian Award for the many significant philanthropic contributions he has made to the community.

The Korbel Dinner was held at the Hyatt Regency Denver at Colorado Convention Center. Proceeds will fund scholarships at the Korbel School. More than 1,000 guests attended the event.
