Game of the week: Gymnastics quad meet Saturday

The gymnastics team hosts Missouri, West Virginia and Western Michigan Saturday.

The No. 19-ranked University of Denver gymnastics squad hosts its first of two quad meets this season, welcoming No. 13 Missouri, No. 24 West Virginia and Western Michigan to Hamilton Gymnasium at 6 p.m. Saturday. The Pioneers enter the meet with a regional qualifying score (RQS) of 195.270, the figure that determines seeding in NCAA postseason competition.

Saturday’s meet will be streamed live on Pioneer Vision.

“We really appreciate the continual support from the DU faculty, staff and students this season,” head coach Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart says. “We strive to provide a high level of entertainment, and Saturday’s meet will showcase four quality squads.”

The Crimson and Gold are 1-0 against Western Michigan (RQS: 193.995), 4-4 against West Virginia (194.670) and 8-7-1 against Missouri (195.790), including a 0.1-point loss earlier this season in Columbia, Mo.

Senior Louise Mercer (Nottingham, England) inked her name into the DU history books on Feb. 25, tying 2009 DU graduate and Venezuelan Olympian Jessica Lopez for the third-best bars score in school history (9.975). Mercer’s bars performance earned her a second consecutive title in the event.

Sophomore Moriah Martin (Lake Mary, Fla.) tallied a career-high 39.425 in the All-Around in the Pioneers first WAC victory on Feb. 25 against Sacramento State. Martin won the vault and floor titles as well, recording a 9.900 in both events.

Martin and Mercer were named Verizon Western Athletic Conference Gymnast of the Week and Specialist of the Week, respectively, the league office announced Tuesday. The Pioneers have accumulated eight WAC awards this season.

Single-meet and group tickets are on sale for the 2012 season. For information, visit www.DenverPioneers.com or call the Ritchie Center Box Office at 303-871-2336.
