Men’s lacrosse player cycles across the country for charity

Rather than relaxing on the couch, University of Denver sophomore men’s lacrosse player Colin Woolford is spending his summer cycling across the country. Woolford is part of a six-person group cycling from San Jose, Calif., to New York as part of Bicycles Against Poverty’s Pedal for a Purpose tour.

Bicycles Against Poverty is a nonprofit organization that distributes bicycles to individuals in Africa who pay back for the bikes in monthly installments.

“The most rewarding part of this experience for me has been stopping along our bike rides every day to speak with numerous people about the impactful and unique cause,” Woolford says. “It is always so uplifting to speak about the strong impact a bicycle can have in changing the lives of many villagers in Uganda, which makes our riding every day a lot easier.”

The cyclists will ride more than 3,200 miles in less than 10 weeks and will stop in major cities along the way to host events.

The team will be at the Denver Bicycle Café, 1308 E. 17th Ave., at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday to help raise awareness and money for the organization. The team has a fundraising goal of $100,000 throughout the ride.
