Five DU students have taken advantage of the University’s offer of free on-campus housing for students living in the University-area neighborhood hit by a recent string of burglaries.
There are 150 beds available for the remainder of the spring quarter, says Justin Price, director of housing and residential education.
“Students were feeling unsafe, and they couldn’t get out of their leases. Offering free housing seemed like a fair option,” Price says.
Denver Police continue to search for the man suspected in 13 reported off-campus burglaries since the beginning of the year. The last break-in occurred March 11. Since the last incident — in which the suspect attacked a young woman — Denver Police and DU Campus Safety have stepped up their patrols of the area.
“We are still very much working the area and being proactive,” says Sonny Jackson, Denver Police public information officer.
Most of the 13 break-ins have occurred in the 2000–2300 blocks of South High and South Josephine streets.
Last week, reports of an arrest swirled around campus, but Campus Safety Director Don Enloe says there have been no new developments in the case.
DU also contributed $5,000 to the Metro Denver Crime Stoppers’ reward fund for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect. The reward total is now $7,000.
Jackson urges residents to continue to be “very much aware” and contact police upon seeing any suspicious activity.
