The Australian Chamber Orchestra will perform with the German operatic singer Andreas Scholl at the Newman Center on Thursday, April 30, at 7:30 p.m.
Steve Seifert, executive director of the Newman Center, anticipates that the acoustics in June Swaner Gates Concert Hall will perfectly compliment the combined sound of the orchestra and Scholl.
Scholl will lend his voice to a concerto grosso and several arias written by the German composer George Frideric Handel, as an acknowledgement of the 250th anniversary of the Handel’s death.
Thursday’s performance will mix tradition with modernity by featuring works such as Haydn’s 44th Symphony and the Czech composer Pavel Haas’ From the Monkey Mountains.
“The programs they design juxtapose longstanding classics with more contemporary compositions,” Seifert says.
The orchestra’s trademark energy comes from its unique approach to performances, during which, according to traditional style, every member of the orchestra except for the cellists play standing up.
Formed in Sydney in 1975, the Australian Chamber Orchestra is under the leadership of Richard Tognetti.
John Baril, music director for the Central City Opera, will give the pre-performance “Behind the Curtain” lecture at 6:30 p.m.
