Mexican-style restaurant opens its doors

The Pioneer, a fresh-Mexican-style restaurant with a DU theme, officially opened Sept. 3 on the site of the former Hong Kong Café.

The restaurant, at the corner of South University Boulevard and Wesley Avenue, was almost completely gutted and rebuilt, says manager Eric Young. The Pioneer’s freshly painted walls are replete with University photos, banners and memorabilia, and the interior uses bright oranges and purples to underscore what bartender Sara Bechen says is a friendly neighborhood bar with a sports theme.

The menu features tacos, enchiladas and sloppy burritos and serves until midnight seven days a week. Hours are 11–2 a.m. The Pioneer features an 11-table outdoor patio that Young says will be winterized with an awning and heaters for year-round use.

“It’s warm and welcoming,” says patron Celine Powner. For more information, go to www.littlepubco.com or call 720-536-4802.
