Political science major Andrew Struttmann has been selected to attend the prestigious Henry Clay Center for Statesmanship conference, held June 16–23 in Lexington, Ken. Each year, full scholarships are provided to 51 college seniors from across the nation to attend the Henry Clay Center Student Congress. This intensive five-day program educates participants in diplomacy, dialogue, listening skills, negotiation and mediation. Struttmann was nominated to attend the conference by faculty in DU’s Department of Political Science.
“Andrew was an obvious choice to represent Colorado at this conference,” says political science Associate Professor Seth Masket. “He has impressed many of our faculty members through his intellectual curiosity, his eloquence and his commitment to vigorous but respectful debates of ideas.”
The conference is named after Clay, a former speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives who was dubbed “the great compromiser” in the 1800s for his work on slavery and the nullification crisis. The Henry Clay Center for Statesmanship is hosted by the University of Kentucky’s Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce and Transylvania University’s Martin School of Public Policy and Administration.
“I am honored to represent both the University of Denver and Colorado at this conference,” says Struttmann, who grew up in Sterling, Ill. “The skills I learned in leadership and statesmanship have been nurtured and fostered by the faculty in the political science department. In essence, this nomination is a culmination of the talents that DU has allowed me to pursue and grow in.”
