Background
Prof. Catherine Kunst conducts genetics research on ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis; Lou Gehrig’s Disease). ALS is a fatal neurodegenerative disease for which there is currently no effective treatment. After the onset of symptoms, people with ALS typically become paralyzed and die within 2 to 5 years. She works with a transgenic (genetically engineered) mouse model of the disease. The goal of her research is to identify naturally occurring genetic variations that make some individuals less susceptible to developing ALS than others.
