DU to ring in summer with second-annual Carillon Recital Series

For many people, the sound of a carillon is a bellwether for the holiday season. But at DU, the Williams Carillon will chime throughout the summer during the second annual Summer Carillon Recital Series.

University Carillonneur Carol Jickling Lens started the series in 2010.

“DU has one of the top-10 carillons in the country, if not the world,” she says. “I want the greater Denver community to realize what a treasure they have here.”

2011’s recitals will include a variety of music by guest carillonneurs Geert D’hollander of Belgium, Koen van Assche of Belgium, Anne Kroeze of Holland, Carlo van Ulft of Holland and Janet Tebbel of Michigan.

Lens encourages listeners to bring a picnic and enjoy the summer weather since all recitals are open-air performances.

I may be biased, but I love nothing more than walking around campus and hearing the carillon playing in the background,” she says. “It adds so much.”

The recitals will be at 7 p.m. June 22, July 6, July 20, August 3 and August 17 at the Ritchie Center. The best place for listeners to hear the concerts is the south side of the Ritchie Center. Recitals are free and open to the public and will take place rain or shine.
