The Mendelssohn Trio (Ron Francois, violin; Barbara Thiem, cello; Theodor Lichtmann, piano), together with guest Margaret Miller, viola, will perform classic works in a recital this Friday. The trio formed in 1988 and has toured Europe twice, with another tour scheduled for this summer. The group was named for Thiem’s great grandfather, Franz von Mendelssohn, a nephew of the well-know composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy.
On Friday they will perform one of Beethoven’s most beloved trios, the “Archduke.” The piece was written in 1810-11, and the first public performance of the work was played by Beethoven himself. Beethoven started going deaf in 1801, and the premiere of the “Archduke” trio was his final performance.
The group also will perform Dvořák’s Piano Quartet Op. 87.
The concert is at 7:30 p.m. April 27 in Hamilton Recital Hall at the Newman Center for the Performing Arts, with a reception to meet the artists following the performance. Tickets, $21 for adults and $19 for seniors, are available at the Newman Center box office. Admission is free for students from any school and all DU Pioneer Card holders. Parking is free at the Newman Center parking garage with entrance from E. Wesley Ave.
