The University of Denver Division of Athletics and Recreation has achieved an unprecedented 100 percent participation rate among its student-athletes and staff in annual giving during the 2011–12 calendar year.

A total of 326 student-athletes donated to the Pioneers Reinvesting in Denver Excellence (PRIDE) Fund, while 128 full-time DU athletics employees contributed to the Pioneers for Pioneers program.

The PRIDE Fund was developed several years ago as an avenue for student-athletes to show pride in their teams and the athletic department through a financial contribution. DU believes it is the first athletic department in the country to accomplish 100 percent participation among its student-athletes.

“Our 100 percent participation in the PRIDE Fund and Pioneers for Pioneers program speaks volumes about the pride and passion our student-athletes and staff have for the University of Denver,” says Peg Bradley-Doppes, vice chancellor for athletics and recreation. “This ‘all-in’ mentality is what makes DU a special place. Our student-athletes and staff understand the importance of ‘paying it forward’ in creating a legacy to ensure the valuable DU tradition.”

The University’s administration is working with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee to discuss how the funds can be reinvested in student-athlete initiatives. Ed Estlow, a Board of Trustees member, former student-athlete and University benefactor, delivered his matching gift of $7,500 after the student-athletes achieved 100 percent participation in the PRIDE Fund.

“We often talk about how outstanding a place the University of Denver—and, specifically, our Division of Athletics and Recreation programs—are,” says Assistant Athletic Director Beth Kuwata. “This is just another example of setting the standard for supporting our University and programs at an extraordinary level.”
