Daniels to offer Summer Business Institute for non-business majors

Marketing, finance and leadership are everyday topics for workers in corporate America. Now, non-business majors at the University of Denver can be exposed to these concepts through the Daniels College of Business Summer Business Institute.

The intensive, three-week business and leadership crash course will give students the confidence and knowledge to launch a career in any industry.

“We receive feedback from people who didn’t study business who say that when they started their first job, they wished they had known more about finance or marketing,” says Becca Mahoney, program manager. “They wish that they had had the base of knowledge so that they’d feel more comfortable.”

The course, which runs from June 13–July 1, will cover topics including accounting, marketing, organizational leadership, sales, strategy, life skills, creativity, protocol and presentation skills. Participants will complete the Insights® Discovery Profile, a business-focused personality profile offering a framework for self-understanding, and will develop an individual career development plan. Students will also attend a weekend leadership retreat at The Nature Place, a conference and education center in Florissant, Colo.

Courses will be taught by professors from the Daniels College of Business, the Pioneer Leadership Program and guest lecturers.

“Attendees will come out of the experience with a greater awareness of their strengths, an ability to manage their own weaknesses, and the ability to present themselves as valued professionals,” Mahoney says.

The non-credit program is offered to juniors, seniors, graduate students or recent alumni who are non-business majors. There are no prerequisites or GPA requirements, and grades will not be given. The fee for students who register by March 1 is $3,500, which includes lunches and the leadership retreat weekend. Summer lodging and a meal plan can be arranged.

Mahoney will hold an information session at 6 p.m. Jan. 26 for those interested in finding out more. Visit the website for more information or contact Mahoney at becca.mahoney@du.edu.
