It’s been 48 years since Josef Korbel help found DU’s Graduate School of International Studies, but his legacy lives on in the global accomplishments of his daughter, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. Albright comes to DU on April 13 for “A Conversation on Diplomacy” with former U.S. Ambassador Christopher Hill, dean of DU’s Josef Korbel School of International Studies. This DU-sponsored event will be held from 2:30-3:30 p.m. at the Cable Center Hall, 2000 Buchtel Blvd. Registration is closed.
Albright’s father, Josef Korbel, a diplomat, fled from Communist Czechoslovakia with his family and came to the United States in 1948. In 1949, he began teaching international relations at the University of Denver. He was the first dean of the Graduate School of International Studies, now called the Josef Korbel School of International Studies.
Albright was the 64th secretary of state and the first woman to hold that position. During her tenure, Albright was known for her strong commitment to arms control, human rights and peace. She played a lead role in forging America’s successful response to terror and ethnic cleansing in Kosovo and was a forceful advocate of bringing war criminals to justice.
Since leaving office, Albright has authored three New York Times bestsellers: Madame Secretary: A Memoir; The Mighty and the Almighty: Reflections on America, God, and World Affairs; and Memo to the President: How We Can Restore America’s Reputation and Leadership.
