From opera to Africa, feminism to the Middle East, this year’s list of Humanities Institute Salons covers a wide range of topics.
Each year, DU’s Humanities Institute holds eight to 12 salons beginning in October and going through spring of the following year.
About 20 people meet in a private home with a faculty member from DU’s Divisions of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences to learn and exchange ideas.
“It’s a wonderful way for people to hear about the fascinating topics our faculty members are pursuing,” says Anne McCall, dean of AHSS. “And, it’s a wonderful opportunity for our faculty members to share their passions with the community — engaged people who are really interested to learn more about a certain topic.”
Salons tend to sell out quickly. The next available salon of the season is “Social Media and the Young Middle East,” facilitated by Andrea Stanton, assistant professor of religious studies and hosted by Mary Schaefer and Amy Slothower on Jan. 19.
The practice of “salon-going” dates back to the 17th century, when many of the intellectual leaders of the day congregated in private homes to discuss the latest thinking and artistic developments.
Salons are hosted at private residences. The host’s address is shared upon registration. Most salons cost $35, unless you attend a musical or performance in addition to the salon. A complete list of events can be found on the AHSS Salon website.
